Housing Affordability to be Front and Centre

Media Releases

State Member for Wallsend, Ms Sonia Hornery MP, will today introduce a Notice of Motion into the Parliament calling on the Premier to take immediate action to assist those being squeezed out of the housing market.

The Notice of Motion notes that the Premier, in her first media conference, nominated housing affordability as a major priority for her leadership.

The median house price in Newcastle is now over $700,000 and this means that many would-be home buyers in Wallsend are being forced into renting.

“It is predicted that Newcastle property prices will continue to increase dramatically as people continue to be pushed and priced out of the Sydney market.

“We have reached a crisis and the Government needs to act to ease the pain people are feeling.”

“Maximising new house-building, ending the generous benefits that negative gearing delivers and ensuring the inclusion of affordable rental housing in all major new housing developments are some of the things the Government should be looking at.”

“If the Premier is serious about housing affordability then she needs to take immediate action.”
