More Support Services Needed for Emergency Workers

Media Releases

State Member for Wallsend, Ms Sonia Hornery MP, has used Parliament this week to call for more effective workplace mental health support services for emergency services workers, including those impacted by workplace trauma.

Ms Hornery moved a Notice of Motion, following the recent suicide of yet another Paramedic in the Hunter.

A number of serious questions have been raised about NSW Ambulance’s support for struggling officers.

Quotes attributable to Member for Wallsend, Sonia Hornery

“My Notice of Motion asks the Minister for Health to look at more effective workplace mental health support services for emergency service workers, including those impacted by workplace trauma.”

“I have spoken to emergency service workers about claims of endemic bullying and harassment. There is a toxic culture that has not been quashed despite numerous inquiries and calls for help.”

“NSW Ambulance has said they are making mental health and wellbeing a key focus but it is obvious that this is not enough.”

“We need to see better support and care for workers. Emergency service workers face more trauma in a shift than most people will face in a life time.”

“I look forward to hearing more from the Minister about this.”
