Station Upgrade at Waratah Welcomed

Media Releases

State Member for Wallsend, Ms Sonia Hornery MP, has welcomed the news that Waratah Train Station will receive an upgrade.

Ms Hornery has written to the Minister for Transport on a number of occasions in the last few months about the need to upgrade the station to allow better access for elderly and disabled commuters.

The stairs at the station are currently a barrier for the elderly, people with a disability and parents with prams who wish to travel by train and means they are forced to look at alternative transport.

An upgrade needs to include lifts to make the station accessible to all commuters.

Quotes attributable to Member for Wallsend, Sonia Hornery

“An upgrade of Waratah Train Station is long overdue and very welcome news for local residents and commuters.”

“Over the last few months my office has written to the Minister for Transport about an upgrade, particularly for elderly and disabled passengers and parents with prams who currently cannot use the station due to the stairs.”

“This is a great outcome for the local community who have been pushing hard for this upgrade.”

“I am glad that the Minister has listened to the community and that the station will be upgraded.”

“We now need to make sure that lifts are a part of the upgrade as many disabled and elderly passengers and parents with prams are unable to use the current station because of the stairs.”

“I look forward to seeing the plans for the station in the coming months.”
