State Member for Wallsend, Ms Sonia Hornery MP, is warning motorists of an impending road closure this weekend, to allow for the installation of a large shared pathway bridge over Newcastle Road at Jesmond, as part of the early works for the Newcastle Inner City Bypass.
Transport for NSW has given notice that Newcastle Road, between Croudace Street and the Jesmond roundabout, will be temporarily closed with local detours in place to allow for the crane lift of the main bridge span. The crane and other machinery need to be on Newcastle Road and will carry out the work at night to minimise delays for road users.
Ms Hornery is advising motorists to be aware of the significant detours that will be in place prior to the road closure on Saturday night.
“It is important that motorists are aware of the changes that will be in place on Saturday night and know the way around them, particularly if they are not familiar with the area,” said Ms Hornery.
“It is very exciting to see this first stage of the Bypass getting closer to being completed, with the installation of the 34 metre section of the shared pathway over Newcastle Road.
“Work will occur between 9pm, on Saturday 10 October, and 10am on Sunday, 11 October, to minimise the impact on traffic, particularly as the school holidays come to a close this weekend.
“Local traffic detours will be in place while Newcastle Road is closed and they are extensive so motorists should allow extra travel time.
“A map outlining the detours is available on my social media channels or by calling my office.
“I look forward to seeing the huge span in place on Sunday morning. It is one step closer to improving the traffic flow along Newcastle Road when those lights are removed at Jesmond Park,” Ms Hornery said.
