State Member for Wallsend, Ms Sonia Hornery MP, has launched a petition calling on the State Government to reinstate a park and ride shuttle bus service from McDonald Jones Stadium to John Hunter Hospital.
This follows the opening of a successful park and ride service from McDonald Jones Stadium to inner-city Newcastle and a number of complaints from staff, patients and visitors about the state of parking and transport options at and around the John Hunter.
At peak times it can take as long as an hour just to exit the John Hunter Hospital campus and injured, sick or elderly people often have to walk long distances to reach their appointments. Viable transport alternatives are badly needed.
The petition has already attracted considerable support on social media. Once it collects ten thousand signatures, it will be debated on the floor of the NSW Parliament.
Quotes attributable to Member for Wallsend, Sonia Hornery
“The situation at the John Hunter has become untenable. People are waiting for up to an hour just to be able to drive off the hospital campus.”
“Using the McDonald Jones Stadium car park as a park and ride facility would help alleviate parking pressure and congestion at and around the hospital campus.”
“Unfortunately, even though traffic issues brings the John Hunter to a standstill a number of times a day and staff, visitors and patients are crying out for a solution, management continues to rule out other options to ease the problems.”
“The success of Newcastle City Council’s park and ride initiative shows that people will make use of a service like this, and the private hospital already pays for a private shuttle bus to transport their staff to and from the site.”
“The simple solution to these problems is staring them in the face – a park and ride service was very successful in the past and reinstating it would ease congestion and parking problems.”
“I encourage everyone to sign this petition.”
