Wallsend Misses Out On New Police Resources Again

Media Releases

State Member for Wallsend, Ms Sonia Hornery MP, has called on the Police Minister to review the allocation of new Police recruits after it was revealed that the Central Hunter Local Area Command will receive the lowest allocation in the State.

178 new officers will join the New South Wales Police Force but only two will join the Central Hunter Local Area Command in the Northern Region, which covers areas from Beresfield, Maitland, Cessnock and part of the Upper Hunter.

Ms Hornery has been calling on the Government to allocate more Police resources to the Local Area Command after crime rates increased dramatically in the last few months.

Quotes attributable to Member for Wallsend, Sonia Hornery

“This is a very disappointing result for the Wallsend electorate and for those in the Beresfield and Tarro area.”

“Crime in the local area has increased dramatically in the last few months, there was a 450% increase in crimes during January and February this year.”

“Our local Police officers do an excellent job, but they’re operating with limited resources and this news won’t make things any better.”

“The fact of the matter is that vast areas of the Wallsend electorate are located quite far from the nearest Police station. Response times suffer in circumstances where every second may count.”

“Criminals in the Beresfield area know that Police have to come more than 12km from Maitland or sometimes as far as 33km from Cessnock to get to the area, so they have time to do the crime and get away.”

“The Government continues to say that the area is adequately serviced by Police and they have more than enough resources.”

“Well Minister, the local residents of Beresfield and Tarro say that you should get out of your ivory tower in Sydney and actually see what is happening in our community and explain how you are going to reduce crime in the area.”
